Nikki Otake
After graduating from American University and dedicating myself to political organizing for women and people of color, I recognized that the same barriers I was fighting in politics existed in outdoor spaces. Today, I’m balancing my advocacy work with an unprecedented challenge: becoming the first American woman to complete both the Seven Summits and the Seven Volcanic Summits, while also pursuing the Triple Seven Summits and becoming the first person ever to complete the Seven Lowest Points.
Mountaineering has long been dominated by those with privilege and access. I’m redefining what exploration looks like in the 21st century. By taking on these global challenges with a focus on sustainability and inclusion, I aim to create new possibilities for the next generation of adventurers—especially women and people of color who have been historically excluded from these spaces.
The Seven Lowest Points challenge is particularly meaningful—it’s an entirely new frontier that no one has completed before. This isn’t just about adding my name to the history books; it’s about expanding our understanding of exploration to include environments that are often overlooked yet critically important to our planet’s ecology.
