Lindsay Kocka, Wade Well

Lindsay is a Bozeman-based outdoor performance trainer and the founder of Wade Well, a movement and mobility method built specifically for anglers, guides and outdoor athletes. Fifteen years of coaching, from recreational anglers to professional guides, rock climbers and cyclists. She is an avid fly angler herself, which is the part that matters out here.

Wade Well trains for what fishing actually asks of a body: wading slippery cobble in current, holding a stance on the bow for hours, carrying a loaded pack into a backcountry lake, staying coordinated at hour ten, and recovering fast enough to be solid again tomorrow. Her premise, in her words: “the best angling of your life is still in front of you,” provided the body is ready to meet it.

Certified in Functional Range Conditioning (FRCms), MovNat, PPSC functional kettlebell training and Yoga Medicine, with a degree in anthropology behind it. She has consulted and built programs for Patagonia, Arc’teryx, lululemon, Athleta, The North Face, SheJumps, Casting for Recovery and The School of Trout.

The Wade Well side of the week

Ten days in Patagonia is an athletic trip, whether or not you call it one.

Most lodges solve logistics and leave the body to chance. Guests arrive after two days of travel, fish hard, and spend half the week sore, stiff or quietly holding back. Lindsay’s work closes that gap. The week is built so you arrive prepared, hold your performance across all ten days, manage the aches instead of absorbing them, and leave feeling better than you did when you landed.

Before you come

A short preparation program you run at home in the weeks before the trip. No gym, no equipment, no fitness background required.

On the water

Mornings before the boats and evenings after: balance and sensory work, mobility, and the nervous-system reset that makes day nine feel like day two.

After

You go home with the method, not just the memory. Optional one-on-one coaching with Lindsay if you want to keep going.

Five days on the water. Five days in the valley. One table.

There is more fishable water around here than one season can cover. Spring creeks, mountain streams, big float rivers, and lakes clear enough to sight-cast a cruising trout along the shoreline. We fish the best water for the day’s conditions, not whatever happens to be closest to the lodge.

Five full guided days, with the mix built around you: wade water, float water, and the lakes. The other five are for the rest of it. Lindsay’s morning sessions, a hike under Cerro Castillo, the hot springs, the wool house in the valley, a day in Coyhaique, an asado that takes all afternoon. If you’d rather be in a boat every morning, say so and you will be. Nobody out here keeps to a schedule.

  • Two anglers per guide, bilingual, on water they’ve fished their whole lives
  • 4WD, rafts, flies, leader and tippet, and your licence, all in
  • A proper lunch on the bank, not a sandwich in a bag
  • Back to the lodge for the second cup of coffee, or stay out for the twilight hatch
  • Lamb on the fire the last night, with the same faces who met you on the first

The water

Float the Simpson, Mañihuales, Paloma and Aysén. Wade the Emperador Guillermo, Blanco, Huemules and Ñirehuao. Lakes: Atravesado, Monreal, Azul, Elizalde, Frío and Pollux.

The days

Ten days, nine nights, Sunday arrival. Five on the water, five in the valley, reordered around conditions. We fish the best water for the day, not whatever is closest.

Day 1 · Sunday
Arrival. The road stops on a ridge before you reach us: three lakes below, peaks, sometimes snow, then a thousand-foot drop to the water. Welcome dinner at the lodge. First Wade Well session before bed, short.

Day 2
The wade water. Spring creeks and mountain streams. Short casts, sight lines, two anglers per guide on water they’ve fished their whole lives.

Day 3
The valley. Morning movement on the deck. The wool house, where the weavers in the valley have been at it longer than any of us. Lamb on the fire in the afternoon.

Day 4
The float water. Rafts and catarafts on the big rivers. Long seams, foam lines, and a proper lunch on the bank, not a sandwich in a bag.

Day 5
Cerro Castillo. A hike under the spires, then the hot springs on the way home. Legs, not arms.

Day 6
The lakes. Water clear enough to sight-cast a cruising trout along the shoreline.

Day 7
Coyhaique. The market, the people who sell us the meat and the honey, a cooking session with the chef, music at the table that night.

Day 8
Your call. Repeat what’s fishing best. If you’d rather be in a boat every morning, say so and you will be.

Day 9
Last cast. Morning on the water. In the afternoon a lamb goes on the fire and stays there. Farewell dinner with the same faces who met you on the first night.

Day 10
Departure. Bread, coffee, the drive back up the ridge. The only traffic jam out here is sheep. Sometimes cows.
